MJY Shelving: Nominal Dimension vs. Actual Overall Dimension Guideline for Supermarket Layout Designers

Standard Upper Shelf Example (Nominal 300 mm)

When an MJY shelf is marked as 300 mm, this 300 mm is the effective goods placement depth — the flat surface area available to stock retail products. The full physical depth of the shelf board itself, including the front lip and rear mounting structure, measures 330 mm.
Designers should note: if you only reserve 300 mm depth in your CAD layout according to the nominal label, the shelf panel cannot fit completely. Always use 330 mm for the panel outer dimension when drawing individual shelf layers.

Base Shelf Example (Nominal 400 mm)

The base shelf, commonly used at the bottom of the shelving bay for bulk and heavy goods, follows the same naming rule. Its nominal size is 400 mm, which refers to the effective product placement depth on the base deck.
However, the complete assembled shelving unit, including the base frame, rear support and bottom kick structure, occupies a total floor depth of 510 mm. This is the most frequently overlooked dimension in supermarket planning. The 510 mm value is the true footprint that takes up sales floor space and must be adopted for bay-to-bay spacing, back-to-back shelving layout and checkout zone planning.

Core Design Note for All Layout Projects

For all MJY shelving quotations, product lists and item names, all stated dimensions refer to the effective display depth for merchandise, not the overall outer dimension or floor occupation depth.
Key reminders for supermarket designers:
  1. Use nominal sizes (300 mm / 400 mm, etc.) for product selection, capacity evaluation and quotation confirmation.
  2. Use the actual overall physical dimensions (330 mm for standard shelf boards, 510 mm for full base assembly) for floor plan drawing, space budgeting and construction drawing dimensioning.
  3. Back-to-back shelf combinations, gondola end caps and perimeter wall shelving all need to be calculated based on the full occupied depth to guarantee sufficient aisle clearance and compliant customer circulation space.MJY Shelving: Nominal Dimension vs. Actual Overall Dimension Guideline for Supermarket Layout Designers 1
